BLOOD ROOT Sanguinaria canadensis
Blood root prefers shaded, moist woodlands. It is native to North America. Blood root is endangered. Blood root is one of the first to appear in the
spring, anywhere from March to May depending on your area. Delicate white flowers and a distinctive wrap around leaf. Indians used to use the juice
from the root as body paint. It was used by early settlers as cures from skin cancer to sore throats and other things such as warts, fungus, ringworm
and other parasites. The US Food and Drug Administration has approved the use of sanguinarine extracted from the blood root in toothpastes and
mouth washes as an antibacterial and anti-plaque agent, but it is not a good idea to try and self treat with this herb.
