Cup Plant - Silphium perfoliatum This native robust, long-lived perennial plant/legume may be used as forage for domestic animals with multiple cuts; high potential as a bioenergy crop; provides food for birds and wildlife. Great for planting in the fall as a dormant seeding with germination occurring in the spring. Also, as a privacy border given its tall nature. Cup Plant has a high Pollinator Value but as it is a vigorous plant even throughout its own native range, this plant can be aggressive/invasive when planted outside its historic range and is not a good choice for small landscapes. No matter where you may be planting it, it is a good idea to keep an eye on growth patterns and remove and thin if it starts spreading. Please check with your local agricultural sources for whether this is historically native to your state and if it has been classified within your state as aggressive/invasive and they discourage planting it.
